Day after the Fair

THE DAY AFTER THE FAIR

By Frank Harvey based on a short story by Thomas Hardy

When an illiterate servant girl meets an attractive stranger at the local town fair, she persuades her mistress to write romantic letters on her behalf. The love affair blossoms, but with whom has he fallen in love: the servant or the writer of the letters?

The Day After the Fair covers the main theme of so many of Hardy’s later books, the relationship between ill-matched lovers. Here, the love story is typical of Hardy, sweet but ultimately bitter.
