‘Separate Tables’, first performed in 1954, is a fascinating study of character and the inter-relations of a disparate group of people. On the surface, what is said tends to seem trite and insignificant, but the subtext is powerful and inescapable so that great emotion shows through the typical English reserve and we come to care greatly for the various characters and their problems.
